Essay 6

During the course this semester in my class, my classmates and I watched different films. All related to each other one way or the other. We saw The Matrix directed by the Wachowski brothers, Sleep Dealer a Mexican production, and The Truman Show Peter Weir. All these films are related someway, all three the main characters feel like there something other then what they are seeing or where they are living at. Neo in The Matrix was a computer hacker which his alias name was Neo. He felt like there was something other then what he can see, he knew there was something else. Later he realizes that he was living in a false reality created by machines, he finds out that he’s the “one” who can save mankind from the machines. Everyone The Matrix would have to plug in through nodes on the back of their neck. In the Sleep Dealer Memo the main character was not put into a false reality he was raised in Mexico in a small village, he also felt like there was something other then the village he was living in. He would go off by himself to build a machine that would transmit other people’s conversation they would have on the phone to him. Just like Neo he wanted to escape and find out what’s out in the real world other then what he is used to seeing. In The Truman Show like Neo in The Matrix, Jim Carrey’s character was already born into a false reality, growing up in a false reality he realizes that there’s something other then the town he is living in. He later finds out that all the people he knows are all actors since his birth to make him believe that he’s in the real world. His life was being recorded and shown to world live like a T.V. show .
There are many connections between all three movies, in the Sleep Dealer for people to get out of their world to their job’s, they would have to plug into a machine to work. Which generated a false world through their eyes, which made them feel like if they are really working in a different city, town, country, etc. Just like in The Matrix Neo, Trinity, and the others would have to plug into a machine to do certain jobs in the “virtual world”. In The Truman Show he felt there was something else other then his world like in The Matrix and in Sleep Dealer. Neo and Memo felt the same way and all three escaped what they were seeing for years to something different. These movie are clearly have many differences. In The Truman Show Truman was filmed ever since he was born and put in fake world with actors, acting very well to make him believe he in a real world. In The Matrix Neo was born in the false world but he was never filmed since his birth. He was found later on when he became an adult to take him out of the programs the machines had him in, into to the real world with trinity and the others. In the Sleep Dealer Memo was not born in a false reality or was filmed since his birth. He had a choice to escape what he is used to seeing or used to living in. He finally leaves his village and gets nodes. Nodes are thing on his arms and neck that lets him plug into the machines.
In the films there was no big thing of race in the films. In there was no significance to race. There were no issues towards the races but there was a big difference between the races in The Matrix the races were humankind itself and the machines. And in The Truman Show the races where only black and white people ordinary people supposedly. In the Sleep Dealer all the people where all Hispanics, they were all Mexicans. Reasons because this movie was taking place in Mexico, Tijuana and around the people who lived there. This film is particularly Latino because it revolved around Mexico and its people, its music and its culture. This film said a lot about the rural life and urban life. People who live in the urban rely to much on the machines to do their jobs without ever doing something themselves, but in a rural area people must doing thing themselves like grow their own crops, raise animals, do things by hand without relying on machines.
These films really opened my mind and made me realize how people really depend on machines to do certain thing without us even realizing it. The films really gave me an understanding of rural and urban life settings.

Sleep dealer: Blog 12

Sleep Dealer is a mexican production, themes that make the movie mexican is that the whole area where everything is taking place is in Tijauana, Mexico. Also because the actors are latino, they all spoke spanish....well just cause they spoke spanish does not signify that there mexican, but their way of speaking spanish is diffrent. Im hispanic, im dominican, and the when we speak to our parents we dont call them "jefe". "jefe" means boss or like the head chief, in the sleep dealer memo said "Los veremos mastarde jefe" -- "ill see you soon dad". We would not use jefe in that way we would only use it if we were working and talking to our bosses.

Sleep Dealer is obviuosly a hispanic matrix, with the nodes on their arms and neck and they would "plug in" like in the matrix to escape reality. In the Matrix they wopuld plug in to do thier jobs as either save some one or kill some one. in the Sleep Dealer people would plug in to escape reality to also work lets say in California. They seem like they are there but they have never seen it with thier owns, just electrical impluses sent to the brian to make them think that they are somehwere else. Diffrences that ive noticed is that Neo was Born already plugged in, Memo in the Sleep Dealer was not born in the program he had to go to the city to get his nodes put in. Another diffrence is that in The Matrix there was not distinct race, but in the Sleep Dealer there was a distinct race the mexican race and their culture. There was a diffrence between them a big diffrence in the matrix everybody were from urban areas, like friom NY. Whild the people in the Sleep dealer alot of them were from both rural and urban areas. Memo was from the rural part of Mexico planting crops and gather water for his family while others were plugged in , in the city.

For future class trips the trip to The Museum Of Moving Image is a good experiences for those in media clutsers or studing on media. It explains alot about how special effects is used and how everything came to be what it is now. How movies were made back then and how is progressed, and how editing is done on sound in movies. I think this trip to The Museum Of Moving Image should have been done early in the semester to get a better understanding of effects and editing. And how everything came to be from T.V's the looked like washing machines, stove and ovens which was ment for woman back in the 1900's. An exhibit i would say that is a good place for a student in a media class would be the exhibit with the history of the T.V's, because behind it is the history of the cameras they would use to film movies. and the history of special effects, people need to understand the past before they can head towards the future.
